I couldn't tell if I was reading a suspense thriller, romance novel or human saga. But then I realized, Champagne, Jellybeans and Chocolate was more than a love story it's a read filled with characters ready to change its readers.When the story opens we meet Royce, who has come to know intimately the words bum and homeless, because he's been sleeping in his car and currently he's unemployed. But what we quickly find out about Royce besides his living arrangements is he is far from a bum; but a brother who has fallen on hard times.
Paula's a successful sales representative for Form Tech pharmaceutical. Currently she is working on getting a contract bid from Mercy Health Systems. If this partnership comes to fruition Paula can expect a large commission and incentive. She is successful enough to live in a one bedroom luxury rental with a view in a doorman controlled building. She has not made it to the top; but she's certainly far from the hood.
Daily Royce showers in a bathroom with the guest at the Skyline Inn Hotel. Paula on the other hand showers in her Italian themed bathroom. Both are living in different situations; but also emotionally the same. Paula is heart broken and living in comfort, while Royce is spiritually and financially broken living in his car.
What surprised me was the speed the relationship moved between Royce and Paula once they reconnected. It wasn't slow or fast but a realistic development between two adults who were once in love, a fluid motion, with unexpected turns and twist. After a series of ups and downs, and separations, Paula is not ready to trust again, but Royce is ready to love like it's the first time. What's a girl to do when hurt is all she knows from her previous relationships. And now it looks like love is trying to take up residence in her heart?
Champagne, Jellybeans and Chocolate proved to be a fantastic read with strong imagery. As I was reading I was able to imagine all the situations and visualize the characters. The writing skill of Mr. Taylor allowed this reader to see the story vividly hear the characters voices as I read. Royce's transformation was enjoyable and believable. I didn't feel it was farfetched for him to move from one space of time to the other in a span of months. A brother with a dream and a good woman that he loves to share it with is a dangerous MILLION dollar weapon.
Please don't sleep on this author or this title - OUTSTANDING

Welcome to the well-known everyday struggle of the majority in finding true love. In "Champagne, Jellybeans, and Chocolate", we enter into the worlds of Royce and Paula. Two high school sweethearts who are unexpectedly reunited one fateful day. Royce immediately begins his pursuit of rekindling the love they once shared; but finds himself intimidated by the obviously high maintenance Paula. He struggles with picking up the pieces of his broken life after tragically losing both of his parents. As his relationship with Paula progresses, Royce is able to pull himself out of his homeless and broke circumstances. In the meantime, he has to compete with the high rollers trying to buy Paula's love and fears losing her to the "good life". Not only does he have to deal with the high rollers, he also has to figure out a way to fix things once Paula finds out he hasn?t been truthful about his living situation. Will true love prevail, or will the ?good? life win over Paula?s heart?
The first thing that caught my attention was the title of this book. I wondered how Taylor came up with such a unique title. After reading the book, I realized it was absolutely perfect. I love the meaning behind the title as it holds sentimental value between the main characters. I enjoyed reading this book and am thoroughly impressed with Taylor's ability to tie all of the characters together. This made for a good read and brilliant twists. The characters were also well-developed and easy to relate to. Despite the slight editing issues, the story was still an emotional and heart-tugging one. Romance novel fans will definitely fall very much in love with this story. In my opinion, "Champagne, Jellybeans, and Chocolate" stands out from other romance novels because the storyline wasn't overly predictable. The twists kept my pages turning! I am certainly looking forward to RL Taylor's future literary works. He's got the creative gift!
This is by far one of the best romance novels I've read. I might even go as far to say that I like this author as much as Sophie Kinsella--and more than Nicholas Sparks.
The book is more than just a romance novel. It also has crime, mystery, fiction, and romance all wrapped up into one delicious novel.
The author touches on some real world problems and relationship drama that are dealt with very well.
One of the main characters, Royce Tyler, has been going through a rough patch in life (jobless and homeless)...until he meets his beautiful college ex, Paula, all over again. Will she take him back? Can Royce share his secret with her? Who will Paula choose in the end? Which is more important true love or money/status?
Each character has their own history and are not typical cookie-cutter roles.
This story deals with real issues and any person at least in their 20's should be able to relate to this book.
I've definitely enjoyed this book, and at only 99 cents, it's a steal! I just wished the author would tighten up the punctuation (there are mostly commas missing in certain areas) and this novel would be PERFECT!
I love this series, and can't wait til I read book number two Dreaming of a Crayon Sun (Royce Tyler / Champagne Series - 2)
If you're a fan of fiction (urban/contemporary), crime/thriller, mystery, and romance, then this book is for you!
I hope the best for this author, and hope to see more of their work. I loved the multicultural cast of characters!
