I got this for my husband, he has not yet read the book, but really enjoys the advice this author gave in his other books.. His books may of been written many years ago, but the information and advice can still be put into practice even in today's society.
Some smart teacher should really make this book into a class in highschool or college. It really contains some very great lessons on how to conduct and take full responsibility for your life, and achieve your goals and dreams.
These lessons are all to easy for us to forget as life rolls on, and this book reminds us of how much we can actually achieve if we set our minds (and actions) towards it.
Where this book differs from so many (and some very good) recent personal development books is that it contains many real examples of real people. If you are a parent of a teen, a really good idea would be to make this a sort of fun family study course.
That would probably be an event that they will remember very fondly for the rest of their lives, and carry it on to their children as well.
This book is around 100 years old and is still around as well as revered, that alone should tell you a lot right there.
This book has been compared to the Bible (a la, proverbs) and I wouldn't disagree. So many great stories and bits of wisdom, everyone would benefit from reading this wonderful book. I've read several of the author's books and they always seem to be ready to inspire and awaken you when you are ready. If you want to read a great book that is the foundational support for so many of the self help books of today, this is a great start to your study.
A much needed book for today. Rules for success that combines developing a depth of character along with personal initiative and action. Gives timeless examples that there are no shortcuts to fulfilling your potential and that "flashes in the pan" and those who become famous based on low brow shock will never be eternal figures like those who contributed to society by being themselves at their best. Should be required reading for Life.
Every 14 year old and older should not only read this book they should make a study of it. It is like an operational manual for the human spirit that lays out a very clear path to success in life. A truly great book!
After hearing two other top folks recommend this, I decided to go ahead and buy it, and I found myself very motivated to read what Marden had to share (especially on focus, and persistence). It's a series of short chapters that have remarkable clarity and biographical examples of what many successful people did throughout history, and the perserverance and focus they had to accomplish great goals. Written in a superbly "grand" style used by authors of Marden's time, it manages to show how to capture the best of people's triumphs over adversity, and many examples of the hardships that highly successful people overcame, from Lincoln to Napoleon to many others. Fascinating, compelling, and inspiring -- well worth reading.

Some excellent points in this book and timeless truths. 5 star rating for the great truths in this book but you'll most likely skip a few chapters because the material is dated and not really applicable to today. Other than this the book is excellent.
